New STR Loci Under Development by the NIST Forensics/Human Identity Project Team

A number of new STR loci are under development at NIST to aid forensic casework and the human identity testing community. These loci have been screened to be effective miniSTR markers (i.e., small PCR products can be generated) for use in degraded DNA analysis (see Coble and Butler JFS 2005;50(1):43-53). Eventually full locus characterization information including population data with allele frequencies will be made available on this website for each of the following markers. These autosomal STR markers were developed in triplex "NC" (non-CODIS) assays. The NC STR loci were chosen to be physically unlinked from the standard core CODIS STR loci so as to permit use of the product rule when combining data between CODIS STR and NC loci.

The NC01 loci have been recommended for adoption by European laboratories (see Gill et al. Forensic Sci. Int. 2006;156:242-244) with D2S441 replacing D14S1434 (Gill et al. Forensic Sci. Int. 2006;163:155-157). Thus, the proposed future core loci include D2S441, D10S1248, and D22S1045.
